Moch IV - Moch Pryderi

By Ceri Shaw, 2010-09-13

It was a great pleasure to be offered a copy of Moch Pryderi's recent CD , Moch IV for review at the recent NAFOW Festival in Portland . Diolch yn fawr Bob. There is a complete track listing at the bottom of this post together with a YouTube video of the band performing 'Santa Anna's Retreat/Pa La Mae 'Nghariad' for anyone who wants to skip forward and sample the bands style without any further introduction.

So, who are Moch Pryderi? They might be described as a ceilidh/twmpath band which combines Welsh, Breton and North American folk influences in their repertoire. I realize of course that the term 'ceilidh' applies more properly to Scottish traditional music and that ' twmpath' means no more in Welsh than a grassy hillock or mound on which musicians in bygone centuries would perform. But then again 'ceilidh' simply meant social visit at one time and its for Welsh and Scottish traditional bands and musicians to call their music whatever they like.

The band who are based in Fredericksburg, Virginia have been performing together since 1998. In that time they have recorded four studio albums and performed at numerous folk and Celtic festivals on the East coast. They are a six piece band ( Mary Triola, Dave Rich, Rik Rice, Bob Roser, Deborah Wenrich, and Bill Reese ) and they play a wide range of Welsh and traditional instruments ( Welsh triple harp, small and great pipes, Breton bombards, Welsh pibgorns, Celtic bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, flutes, whistles and percussion )

The album launches with a spirited rendition of 'Trafaeliais Y Byd' ( I Travelled The World ) a song about travelling the world and returning to Wales. This song is a standard in the repertoire of Welsh traditional bands and performers and the version on this album is based on an earlier arrangement by Dafydd Iwan. For fans of the pipes track two, 'Welsh Bagpipe Melody' will prove a treat. This lively arrangement of three traditional Welsh dance tunes has a distinctly good time feel to it and even if you've had too many cwrw's to get up and dance you're sure to find your toes tapping in time. Other Welsh traditional numbers on the album include 'Hen Ferchetan', 'Bu Farw'r Cathod' and 'Bachgen Bach O Dincer'. There is also a beautiful instrumental arrangement of 'Llwyn On' ( The Ashgrove ) played on the bouzouki, double string harp and triple strung Welsh harp. In short there is something to suit all tastes and moods on this highly recommended collection from one of America's premier Welsh/Celtic folk bands.

I should also mention that the band's website is well worth visiting. In particular there is an informative page on the history of Welsh folk music , which can be found here and a page on which the history of Pryderi's Pigs ( after which the band are named ) is recounted.

World Mental Health Day will be celebrated at the Wales Millennium Centre this year with the launch of a novel Bamboo Grove , set in Bangkok, with a bipolar teenager as its main character. Manic depressive author Romy Wood looks at the extremes of life in the Far East through the eyes of Jessica, a young woman who also has the disorder. Precarious at the best of times and vulnerable to exotic job offers, Jessica meets Moses, a pseudo-Buddhist monk and Pippa, a Romanian illegal immigrant, and is sent to Bangkok by a quixotic pair of young businessmen. All become intricately, messily bound by the unique and rather dubious organization that is Eastern Vision. The empire has one foot in the seedier realms of metaphysical Surrey and the other amongst the slums and skyscrapers of the City of Angels. From faux-Eastern objets to real estate, client-centred sperm-donation to gypsy magic, the tangled fortunes of Eastern Vision go from strength to strength and back again. Bamboo Grove is a very funny satire about sex, financial boom and bust, corruption, cultural collision, fertility, altruism and unethical tourism.

Mother of three, Open University tutor and author Romy Wood is always creative and hugely practical about having had to be in and out of hospital while she wrote the novel and indeed in the weeks approaching the launch itself. Determined to be there on the day, Friday 8 October (7.30pm), she laughs that they wouldnt dare keep me in for something as important to me as this, adding,

It is so fortuitous that my novel is published for World Mental Health Day because its strong central character Jessica suffers from bipolar disorder but isnt defined by it. Since Stephen Frys flagship documentary, The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive , bipolar disorder has begun to lose its stigma. I dont pretend that my novel will have the same impact but it does show a family affected by this disorder within a story of global settings and concerns. I hope that someone equally as prominent as Stephen Fry will publicise their personal experience of schizophrenia and other mental illnesses in order to break down prejudice.

Romy Wood taught drama in comprehensive schools for ten years. She works as an associate Lecturer for the Open University. This novel is informed by her experiences of Romania and Thailand, where she has friends and family, as it is by Romys life as a woman with Bipolar Disorder. She lives with her husband and three children in Cardiff.

'Aged To Perfection' at NAFOW

By Ceri Shaw, 2010-09-07

AmeriCymru has been invited to circulate copies of 'Aged To Perfection' at NAFOW and Wordstock by Age Cymru. Age Cymru is the largest charity working for older people in Wales and it organiszes the annual Gwanwyn Festival which offers opportunities for greater participation by older people in the arts. Age Cymru describe the publication in the following terms:-

'This book is different from other books in two ways. Firstly writing can be a solitary pastime, however, this book enlisted the help of writing groups from all over Wales and the results illustrate the benefit to writers of sharing, nurture and support from their peers. We ignore the social isolation of older people at our peril.

Secondly it is intended that this book travels as far afield as possible, you will see the pass it on logo throughout the book. Please enjoy this book and pass it on to your friends so that as many people as possible can enjoy its contents. The book has its own Twitter page and we'd love you to Tweet us or email us with details of where you found it and what you thought. We'll be charting the books progress on the Gwanwyn website. '

We presented a copy to Tom Owen, President of the Welsh Society of Portland ( see pic below ). Tom said:-

'Alexander Solzhenitsyn in his Nobel address said that " literature is how a country talks to itself". What we have here is a way for an age demographic to talk to itself. Not that any of us are getting any older of course :) This is a good way to share the experience.'

Each of the books is numbered and Tom's copy is number 1023. Tom promised to pass his copy on when he has finished with it and for our part we will be sure to Tweet and blog each time we present someone with a copy of the book. Check back in the coming weeks for further reports.

In closing we should mention that if you are not lucky enought to come across a 'hard' copy of 'Aged To Perfection' all the stories in the book can be read on the Gwanwyn website here:- 'Aged To Perfection'

Showing of S4C production 'Other World' ( Y Mabinogi ) 2002 ( 1hr 44mins )

"On his eighteenth birthday, Lleu's world is shaken by the news that he is adopted. On the same day, his friend Rhiannon thinks that she may be pregnant, and Dan, who lives in his big brother's shadow, is as scatty as ever.

They all put their problems aside for the day when they come together to celebrate Lleu's birthday. Venturing on a boat trip along the coast they suddenly see a change in the water. They realise that, on May Eve, they have found the golden doorway to the Otherworld, which can be seen shining deep beneath the waters.

Being an independent and stubborn girl, Rhiannon doesn't think twice before plunging into the sea, and the other two are not far behind. As they swim deeper and deeper and get closer and closer to the golden gate, they are transported many centuries ago to the incredible world of the Mabinogi."..... more

"The musical score is arranged by John Cale , formerly of the Velvet Underground, in conjunction with the National Orchestra of Wales.

Ioan Gruffudd (Hornblower, The Forsyte Saga), Matthew Rhys (The Graduate stage adaptation), Jenny Livsey, Daniel Evans, Phillip Madoc, Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) and Paul McGann (Withnail and I) are just some of the famous names who have contributed to the film."..... more

The project is introduced in the following terms on the Seren website:-
